Kanezawa Hayama-gomori
金沢の羽山ごもりかねざわのはやまごもり
D A T E2026-12-24 — 2026-12-26
A Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property transmitted at Kanezawa Kuronuma Shrine in Matsukawa-machi Kanezawa, Fukushima City. Over lunar November 16–18, men seclude themselves in the shrine's confinement hall, undergoing cold-water austerities, fasting, and sutra recitation, culminating in the trance-state 'Yoisa Rite' through which an oracle is received. Most of the rite is non-public; only the final Yoisa Rite is open to spectators. A rare surviving fusion of mountain-ascetic Shugendō and Shinto practice, the rite divines crop yields, weather, and disease for the community.
