Katsuyama Sagichō Festival
勝山左義長まつりかつやまさぎちょうまつり
D A T E2026-02-28 — 2026-03-01
A sagichō (dondo-yaki) festival held on the last Saturday and Sunday of February each year in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture. From atop yagura built in 16 districts of the city, strips of paper inscribed with witty verses are scattered to the beat of drums, and the festival is known for offering phallic-shaped 'decorations' as a harvest pre-celebration rite. On the final night, all 16 yagura are set ablaze at once for a spectacular conclusion. A Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
